I only received 3 ratings after writing on RR for almost 9 months. Getting a low rating the first time feels uncomfortable, especially when the reviewer is silent.
Okay, why are the ratings too small? I never advertise or swap reviews... so 3 ratings actually reflect 3 people who read and rated my fiction. 2 were satisfied and 1 was probably dissatisfied. It's a small amount of data, but it's valuable to me.
There's a lot of raters at RR that low rate just to put authors in their place. A lot of them look at the first chapter for one second and then drop the bomb. If you have a single typo, it's their excuse to hang you.
You're right. I've also observed reviewer behavior. One camp gives five-star ratings with fabricated praise (fake ratings). Another camp uses ratings to denigrate other works. They're literally fighting over a slice of pizza on a dirty plate.
Here's the thing why I'd rather turn a blind eye on the high ratings (5*) than the low ones (1*); 5 stars not only encourages you to keep writing, it also invites people to come and try reading your work. Low ratings do the opposite, so I'm not trying to be pretentious and say, "I like to have low ratings more than higher ones." (Not saying all are like that, but yeah, that's my idea.)
I was lucky with my RR fiction. The half star rating I got was also a review, and the review was reportable, since it had nothing of value. I reported it, and it was taken down.
Even stats like 'Readers dropped' affect the perspective of potential readers to your work, hence I'm pissed off whenever my count increases, no matter how someone else explain to me "This is how it works."
Well, I can be pissed and curse someone who did that, but in the end, that's all I can do. Hence, I'm trying to be true to myself, eh.
