There's no place better than Novelupdates and MyAnimeList honestly. Otherwise, you need to open up the forums or Reddit and ask people recommendations for a specific genre.

Yeah, I mainly chose the light novels through the ones that bookwalker recommended me. But that place only recommends new ones. And there are no sort features. I was kinda looking for a universal list for all possible books in existence. So that I could choose from there.

After all, I'm not from Japan so I have no idea what exists and what doesn't.
