To me, a chord can be seen as one note or multiple notes depending on how many voices are used in the chord. For example, while not impossible, it is rare for a wood quartet to have more than four voices. Each voice of the quartet creates a thread of motion, the threads are then weaved together to create the string that is the piece of music. (2)

Dissonance and consonance come from how far apart those threads in the string are in a moment.

Let us look at a different example, imagine a piano piece with melody in the right hand and a series of chords in the left. How many strands then would make up the string? That would depend on the voicing. In this example, outside of rests, there will always be two threads: the melody and the chords. (3)
