That is true. But I chose to do this to make her character more interesting. She had to have reasons for the why she is the way she is, and it was good for my narrative. Also rare case of a human saving a beastkin from injustice from her own tribe rather than the other way around.

Well, I can't comment on your MC's past because my FMC's past is more tragic than yours (from what you explained). However, I'm trying to redeem FMC's past by raising her little daughter who brings out the humanity in FMC.
