Okay, he relented and we're doing an isekai. =P
THAT at least I know how to do, after all the tons of anime I've seen.

Could have gone the goblin slayer route.

I guess the MC could literally be a character in someone's ongoing D&D campaign? Though it would leave questions like is he really acting of his own will, or just according to the DMs script. And it might still count as isekai.

But the argument becomes, how do you get into a D&D campaign if you're not thrown into it somehow?
I mean, the only other way that works is if everyone already is in this world, and not players or anything - but then, how does the player system work?
This is why I wonder sometimes how all LitRPGs aren't just naturally isekais. =P
And then you're writing like Tolkien and it's like, "No, thank you."

The rpg system is just normal for the inhabitants, or is not seen by them so they don't realize
Or just have it in a DnD setting and minimize the stat sheet spam.

Precisely my point.
How can there be an exciting RPG adventure if there's no one from the outside world, or the real world, a part of it?
And why would the inhabitants of said RPG world have "stats", or "viewscreens"?
Also, why would they even be in this world in the first place?
Where do they come from?

That's the point. Everyone has the system and there are no players. You include bullshit about how asking for a "character sheet" is normal behavior because a text box will literally appear on command.
This is why I wonder sometimes how all LitRPGs aren't just naturally isekais.
This is the correct way of thinking. However, readers are sexually attracted to Number Go Up so your point is invalidated.

You need an outsider MC to write an exciting story?

Yes, the thrill is in the score, as always.
but what if it wasn't?
What if you couldn't "level up" at all, and everyone stayed at zero forever?
Then you'd have a lot of people sitting around doing absolutely nothing because there's no motivation anymore.
There has to be something other than "levels" in an RPG. *^^*
I've never seen so much self-validation in my life as I have reading/viewing isekai projects. =P

LOL, yes I want $250.
But I have to write something pretty good and well-researched too.
I DO have an idea that came to mind today and I actually started writing it.
We'll see.
Sometimes "leveling up" isn't the only motivation.

?:blob_neutral:
Brother in dao the MC doesn't have "gamer" brain. He doesn't care about levels the way you think he is. The only ones obsessed with highscores are the readers.
In non-LitRPG stories, nobody is killing themselves because they can't track their progress with a level system that doesn't exist.
1. Write Fantasy Novel
2. Add Shitty Numbers for Readers to Beat Their Meat to
3. You Wrote LitRPG Amazing

Step 2 is a joke.
You still need to have a consistent "game" system to ground your power scaling.
But if you're following DnD the rules are already made for you.
