Talked with my brother about that locked room, his solution was that the detective was the person in the locked room, and that the detective/narrator is unreliable. I think that also fits, but I think the thermite solution is a closer fit. However my brother’s guess does fit with the fact that the ‘detective’ had to relinquish their authority, to set a perfect seal in the room. Hard to explain without spoilers.
