Elements of emo are present, but those could as easily be attributed to the sounds of alternative rock in general. Quiet-loud dynamics, confessional lyrics, emotive vocals. Unmistakably emo, but they're also Nirvana.

I don't think Weezer got the sound for Pinkerton from emo either. It seemed more like a consequence of where Rivers was at the time: depressed in Harvard, ambivalent about the success of Weezer's debut.

This raises the question: What is emo? Is it a genre, an aesthetic, a vibe? No one can really agree, which is why the "real emo" copypasta exists.

Nonetheless, one thing remains true about all emo.

It's cringe, but it is free.
