@Freesia.Cutepearl Heh, but you certainly beat mine if we're going to base it on the number of times it was in Trending. Mine only got to Trending for two times, and then was dropped out.

But it's okay with me. I know my story's not that popular with most readers here. I don't think it will ever be.

That's the hard question, isn't it? You can't judge your own writing. You have to rely on the opinions of your readers.

Well, in some aspects, yes (like popularity). But ultimately, you need to judge your own work (like the quality and consistency). If you yourself isn't confident with the quality of your work, then how much more would the audience be?

Putting up a work is like a gamble; you don't put down your cards if you're not confident that you have some punch in your moves. Likewise, if you present your work with lots of doubts in yourself, then by all means, expect the readers to see those flaws. So yeah, ultimately, we have to judge our work, and make sure that if the readers see some problems, it would be minimal.

Confidence, huh? Honestly, my confidence varies depending on my mood. Sometimes I can just write whatever I want without thinking about anything else, but other times, I just can't write without feeling my writing is terrible.

I know as a reader, my writing isn't that great. There is barely any artistry into it.

As a reader, if I find my own work on the wild, I'd probably read it (especially if I got spoiled by the bad stuff in the future anyways since I'm a sucker for tragedy). That doesn't mean it's good enough for my writer self.

Well, most authors do feel the same, especially after writing their manuscripts. The doubts, the anxieties and insecurities are all there.

That's why we take a break after writing.

@Freesia.Cutepearl I haven't been on trending for months. Maybe even three to four months. Trending means getting shown on the front page by the way, not inside the "Read More" page.

How many chapters doesn't really matter. What matters is how much plot that amount of words have gone through. And if I have to separate my novel into books, there's only three books so far.

So yeah, if you think it's good enough for you, put it up. If you managed to get to your goals, then be good to yourself.

Remember that readers judge base on their own biases. If one is action-oriented, then he'd surely find drama to be tedious to read.

Maybe I'm weird but many of the best stories I've read I found by looking in the "Read More" of trending. I often pay more attention to it than the front page. If anything I feel like the first page of "Read More" counts the same as the front page to me. I've checked out stories that were on the last page too.

Also as for the looking at your work as a reader, I... have mixed feelings, on one hand, other's critique has made me more aware of things and worry more, but on the other hand, I tend to be easy to please, and when I proofread I'm also reading as if I was a reader. So I kind of read my story as I write it? Idk, I must be weird. I am both happy and unhappy with it.

@Freesia.Cutepearl Personally speaking,. my story only gets a view boost when it can get to the front page. So being no. 11 or less doesn't really matter for my algorithm.

And I myself have not touched that button since months ago. Trending plus new stories are enough for me. I imagine the majority of readers here are the same.

@Freesia.Cutepearl that's why we need to set goals for our story, characters and events. What is the purpose why your MC is like that, or thinks like that? If you manage to reach those goals, then you can confidently bring out your work.

Otherwise, if we have no goals set for these aspects, we tend to be easily swayed by the opinion of the most vocal of our readers.

While that would be nice, especially if you want popularity, your story has more chance to lose its 'identity' in the vast sea of 'wannabes'.

Yee, I think the best idea for both of us maybe, @ForestDweller is to just write the story we want to and trending be damned? I can't speak for you but for me, 600+ people is plenty, more than I could have ever hoped for or imagined, really. And you have many more. Clearly they like it, so write for you and them? At least.. that's my plan & hope.

Trending sure is nice, but you also have to look at the demographics of a site to make an accurate value for your work.

Now please excuse this old man. My cooking almost burned.
