CSA General Robert E. Lee surrendered his forces (Army of Northern Virginia) to US General Ulysses S. Grant. With the loss of their most capable general, it effectively ended the war against the Confederates. The other substantial Confederate army under Gen. Johnston would surrender to Gen. Sherman on April 25.

Vietnamese forces under the Tran Dynasty defeated the Mongols in the Naval Battle of Bach Dang. The Vietnamese have a record of defeating powerful enemies in their homeland, just like the Pashtuns (Afghanistan).

On April 9, 1942, USAFFE forces in Bataan under Gen. Edward P. King surrendered to the Japanese, with 70k US and Filipino soldiers laying down their arms. They would later take part in the tragic "Bataan Death March".
