Lesson learned. never give away a product for free.

Last I remember, research was done into this. People are more likely to not value things they get for free, than what they pay for.

Though, authors also get caught in this mess. In which, when they transition from free to paid, readers still complain.

It is like, they lose both ways. ?

Readers definitely still complain no matter how they're getting it. The difference is now their attitude is more justified since they actually put something into the product. Plus, if you're going to have to listen to whining either way it's obvious you should at least try to get something out of it yourself.

The market is hyper-competitive. Readers are spoiled for choice.

It is not only that, it is more about the value of something. People are more likely to place less value in something for free, versus something they paid for.
