Depends on the medium. Dexter's a lot darker in the novels while the tv show tries harder to paint Dexter as a good person with questionable methods.

It depends on what you want. If you want a dark comedy featuring an actual sociopath with much more twisted actions juxtaposed to witty thought-out monologues go with the books. If you want a more realistic experience with a sense of urgency and characters that evolve over time go with the show.
