Well, Czar Nick I is 4 generations away from Czar Nick II. Today, we don't casually refer to Benedict XVI as "Benedict the XVI", but rather, just "Pope Benedict" though he is the 16th to bear that regnal name.

You also have to consider that at the time of the Romanovs, being married into their house meant that you belong to one of the wealthiest royal houses of Europe (though it did not necessarily translate to economic matters coz of obsolete economic model at the time).

So yeah, more than self-inflicted, it's more of a priviledge, and an opportunity to have connections to a major European power.

UN doesn't exist back then, so it's really beneficial to have powerful allies by your side.
