Haven’t read Slam Dunk, as for the last couple chapters the manga was axed so the artist could work on Death Note. I have only watched it, but imo from when he was aiming to become an insei up until Sai disappeared was the best of the show. All together a 6/10 or okay, but from then on a 7-8/10 good-great.
I understood it was axed. For me the best part was first 60 or so chapters. It was a 7. Next 90 or so chapters are 6, and the last 30 or so are 5. The ending is really bad and feels secondary. Even though it was axed, there were multiple ways to end it, yet they went with a slam dunk ripoff.
Yeah, I am disappointed with the ending, at the very least they could have given us a chapter that shows Hikaru growing up and continuing his life. Like a page or two of highlight before ending on where he is xyears in the future. Did he get the title, or did he become a teacher in memory of Sai. Things that could have been cleared up in a chapter, even if rushed.
@Pujimaki I think a timeskip ending would've been the best. Considering how manga was axed and steered into "we are here to connect past and present" it would've been 1000 times better to show a grown up Hikaru play with a teen. Making him go full Sai, taking place of Toya Koyo in that beginner's match.
I think the most dissapointing part of Hikaru, for me obviously, is that it never got into the game. I judge manga here, as I don't intend to watch anime. Comparing it to some other sports manga, gambling manga, or generally manga with mindgames, usually games there are much longer. It allows me as a reader to get into head of players, and really soak in the hype.
With hikaru one game is like a couple of chapters at most. There are no explanations behind the thought process, only those 'O' faces when players have epiphany moments how to move. I would've liked it if one game was 10-15 chapters long, and without freaking fillers. Actually treating it like a strategy game, and not just a stub.
In other words, it didn't make me feel hyped about Go, interested in Go, or like Go. I don't care about sports in general. I like cybersports, CS and Dota 2. But real sports? Nah. Yet Slam Dunk made me hyped about basketball, Eyeshield made me hyped about american football, and so on.
