i remember reading somewhere that the reason the mc in jap anime don't ever get laid until maybe the very end is that it alienates the audience somehow. Like if he did it in the middle of the show it would upset the audience cuz the "goal" would be completed somehow.

And it alienates them bc the MC is supposed to be a blank slate for the audience to insert themselves into, so when they get laid (or have personality) it removes the illusion.
