tldr : First crave to do a good product. A long lasting one. That will please you AND others (that you can understand with research/empathy/imagination/OR SAME VIEWS). Then you will get the popularity that will follow suit. NOT THE CONTRARY.

Interesting, I personally disagree with the Madoka part because it simply started the genre, but you would definitely not enjoy such books on the other side 2 of my favorite books are part of the genre.
