Whereas the first interpretation could be hard to swallow, the second one excuses it somewhat because it's not completely to the benefit of the heroes. Rather, they pay a price for tapping into a power they're not capable of wielding at first. The price makes Omegamon a bad deus ex machina into a tension-filled event that could have really harsh consequences.

I do wish it was foreshadowed beforehand, though.

And the animation still sucks.
