I'm not sure how this process is called, but isn't it the usual thing? Person A heard the explanation of a term from Person B, while Person B heard it from Person C, and so on. Each time the meaning of the term gets slightly changed. Combine it with the fact the language change all the time, and the fact people don't bother to study the original meanings, and you get this.
