Malfoy is basically like a chinese pampered arrogant young master, heir of the villainous clan, that sided with a big demon.

And also marvel movies, especially Avenger1 with Loki-Hulk, have shown that this type of villains are a "joke/clown"

At that time, people didn't have this "knowledge/habit"

Just like people now dont understand the famous event about "war of the worlds at radio scaring people think its real"

Voldemort's ultimate goal is slightly different between the books and films. In the books, he wishes to enslave Muggles and take over the Wizarding World, while in the films, he desires to commit genocide against everyone who is not a Pure-Blood Wizard, including all Muggles.
