Everyones suspension of disbelief is unique to them. I can suspend disbelief for pretty much any magic system. But I usually get pulled out by the behaviors of characters that I don't believe. Buildup to a breaking character moment should not be understated.

that's just common sense.
magic is not real, but we all have a common understanding of what it is and how it should function
we live our daily lives with humans, so if we see one of them acting how they're not supposed to, we will think that the writing is wrong.
