why do people hate them so much? I still don't understand.

They hate them for two reasons: furries tend to be queer (so anti-LGBT sentiment is easily directed at them while just under the guise of hating furries), there is a large hating community (so people can be feel well-protected in hating at least one group in their life), and furries are more often than not a sexual fetish (people love hating on others' sexual fetishes).
