I guess I see the appeal, but so many of those books are like collecting trophies. The female heroines don't behave like actual people. It tends to ruin it for me.

It does more or less make sense to have multiple wives in such a scenario, especially in Kingdom building where a leader is taking over multiple realms/lands. Though the King will have a main wife, it's not unheard of to have concubines.
