'Rather' is used as an intensifier here, meaning it works to emphasize. But I feel 'rather' has an overreaching undertone. Mostly in lines of 'expectancy' or 'in comparison.'

"I did rather well." => He expected worse.

"I've got rather a lot of work to do."
