He sat himself down under the shade of a ginkgo tree whose leaves were tinged with yellow. The stable boy a few years back had collected its fallen leaves and curled then to create a bouquet to woo the milkmaid. The man shook his head at the idea of the two lovers who were the trifecta of poor, happy, and dumb.

The man attached the bracelet to the fishing pole with his makeshift line. He hadn’t any true line, so he had had his wife take the sinew of animals and dry them and braid them into a thin rope. She had not enjoyed this task, but he had threatened to use her hair ribbons if she hadn’t.

I don't want to break up your flow, but are you writing a short story in a profile post?

She might not have made the line if she was aware it would lead to him taking her bracelet, but what she didn’t know would only hurt her when she realized. For today, she had no knowledge and thus no pain.

By the time she realizes, perhaps the husband will argue “ah! But if you cared for this bracelet so, would it have taken you so long to miss it? Besides, it was delivered back to you in the belly of this fish, your supper!”

The husband thought not and cared not. He attached the bracelet to the line and cast it out. Now came his favorite part: the wait. He tips his hat over his forehead and nestles into a comfortable slouch against the ginkgo. No nagging, no problems, just the quiet Mother Nature healing his soul and rocking him to sleep.

Suddenly, his peace was shattered by the jostling of the line. A fish was caught upon the line! With a skilled swish, he brought the fish flying to his side.

The fish was beautiful, with scales of Mother of Pearl, fins of gold and platinum, and diamonds for eyes. The treasure bait had brought a precious fish in turn!
