from what I've read about the Spartans they didn't have a great many leisure activities that weren't training of some kind for war

Romans are more on the 'utilitarian' side. Almost all their social lives are geared towards war and government (the state), so that their education was also matched to cater to those. Mini-golf surely won't be useful to them.
Yes, I do agree Greeks and Chinese (the Tangs; Han Dynasty nobles are still war-like...maybe a few, but not all) would love it.
