If I can boil down my amorphous obsession into clearly defined fundamental principles then I can identify the ideal that I want to strive for. Namely, if I can clearly distinguish my desires then I can work towards getting what I want; if I understand the elements of what I love then I can clearly define goals to become more ideal.
