The only popular manhwa that was earlier than SOLO-L. Is probably BREAKER NEW WAVES.
It restarted, but sadly now "has-been". Old cliches and has-been fighting style.

They are early yuri animes. Were quite popular. But why were they popular despite their "quality" ? Simply because, unlike now, yuri wasn't that much accepted / mainstream yet. And no other yuri animes to turn to.

What Tsuru said. It's the first of its kind, just like, I dunno, Azarinth Healer. Its quality is not outstanding, but it's good enough and unlike any other at the time. I read both the novel and manhwa of Solo Leveling, but honestly, I'm not really interested in the anime. I'll probably end up watching at least the beginning to see what it's worth, but eh. Found better things in the meantime.

Also, @Tsuru, I fully agree with you on the Citrus example. I tried to read it after I saw a ton people recommending it, but gave up on 5th-ish chapter because I didn't like it.

Mostly i dropped bc i am a "drama-hater" / "wholesome addict". And the fact author troll slap reader by skipping the moment where "director grandpa" know about FMC identity. And chara designs are.... lackluster.

I only found out about solo leveling when it got an official localization. I think that was maybe a year ago?

Solo Levelling quality has nothing to do with the year of production. The story is simply garbage. It was shit, is shit, and will be shit. Other than that I agree.
