Tbh, I grew up with lots of stories where 'destined lovers' meet up again and again over lifetimes like The Mummy and Charmed, so it seems pretty normal to me.

If your soul is your emotional center, it would be weird NOT to look for the same person. Soulmates is a romantic concept I like, sort of.

it's one thing to have a type but it's another to literally keep the same spouse over 100s of different lifetimes- especially if the spouse as a character doesn't change over the course of that; I would rather have a character not exist than be stagnant and boring

I can't really relate, but I can understand getting bored of the same meal every day.

On the other hand, now I really want to read a story where the lovers change form every ten or twenty chapters, and still recognize each other.
