most VRMMO stories would be so unbalanced and pay2win that no one would actually play them

Oh yeah, there are some really cringe ones. Like there was this one where the dude gets the race titan, the highest strength in the game and no other player can create a titan. Imagine how all the gamers on the internet would flip out if they saw that.

Btw, caveat about real single player games, smooth progression with viable different playstyle is great, but people also enjoy powerspikes and exploits. Like Spiffing Brit's yt channel is dedicated to break a game with exploits. I think players do enjoy stumbling on those possibility and feels like 200 IQ god when they do find it on their own.
