I found out it was made by a studio that later became studio ghibli

Some people would say that was the very first anime that got any kind of traction in the west.

it had so much potential, but what a shit ending!!!!

That was probably back in a time where people weren't controlled as much by their feelings and understood that sometimes nature was something that didn't leave anyone a choice.

What was wrong with it? Were you hoping the Unicorn would end up in a relationship and become human?
@Anon2021 I think that was the point of the story, rather than just a general vibe of the times.
