@Scribbler Closer to the first. I'm redrafting one of my stories, and some scenes are coming out near-perfect - a nice horse's rear end. Then I move to the next scene and it's the horse's front leg. It's so painful to keep writing it...
@Moonpearl How do you do second drafts? Usually, when I write something, that's the best the current version of me can write it. I only rewrite stuff that's months or more old. Maybe I should wait a day or two before trying to rewrite it? Or maybe it's because my chapters are so short. I imagine you're rewriting as a whole a far larger piece.
I leave it for a little bit - ideally a few days or a week at most, so I don't lose the motivation to work on it entirely. During that time, I'll probably give myself a day to recover from finishing it, and then I'll start thinking about it during the spare moments of my day-to-day life. I think about the bits that didn't come out right and why I think they turned out that way, and I brainstorm my way around it.
For example, I might have to admit that I spent too long throwing in fanservice for characters nobody cares about and plan to cut that out or work it into the narrative to be more subtle. I often rewrite those scenes in my head while I'm away from the computer.
