Which is why I think it would do better on reread because you know what to expect and what you're in for. Paradoxically, taking away that expectation almost helps because we get skewed on what to expect.

No, no, not that I think 3.5 is anything bad. You've presented your standards pretty well already. If you'd allow me to indulge, I want to write something that isn't just "good but not great" but straight-up "great". Something that'll knock your top spots in terms of web fiction.
