My university friends had a big conversation about that around ten years ago. I'm not sure if they actually made any progress on it, though.

Do you have a preference for hexagonal pencils over round pencils or anything of that nature?

I feel the same. I, too, draw using a pencil, and digital drawing feels too awkward for me.

I have tried drawing on iPad using a stylus and without it. I have tried drawing on PC (using a mouse) and laptop (Using the touchpad).

The biggest issue I feel is that there is no friction, which makes the experience awkward.

On my iPad I have textured screen protector and use a pencil brush to sketch. I would get extra nibs though since the tips tend to wear out fast on a textured screen protector.

it’s the closest I can to sketching on paper.

My Xppen tab also some texture when I draw in CSP.

though tbf, I haven’t drawn with a pencil in so long. I mainly use pens to sketch. since i tend to sketch on paper then clean it up on my iPad in procreate.

Personally, I never used iPad, but a drawing tablet (One by Wacom).

In my understanding, using iPad may seem like a great transition from traditional media to digital due to similar comfort zones : Flat surface, Your attention on the same screen as what you are drawing.

But there is still a difference.... The surface is vastly different - Ipads are smoother, less friction than regular piece of paper. Your lines may appear too flowy for your liking, or uncontrollable. Especially with stylus pen... Better if you draw using your fingers in which you have more control and friction.

Unlike ipads, drawing tablets provide the necessary friction (still not so similar as real paper but you can feel it through the strokes) but it's still an awkward position from looking at your screen and not on your hand when drawing. You just need to practice and get used to it. :blob_cookie: :blob_cookie:

I felt like drawing with a pencil is way more comfortable than on my iPad, and I don't really understand how to make the experience similar.

Any thoughts? (I'm using procreate)
I find iPad is one of the most horrible experience to draw. It's the farthest from traditional even if you have a screencover with paper like texture, the pen with that super hard and thick nib is so unlike any pencils you would use traditionally.

Maybe you can get another iPad compatible pen with thinner nib? Idk how big your iPad is, but it does make a difference when I draw with thick or thin nib on my 12" surface. Like, it's nice to actually see where I put my lines.

Otherwise, it's just something you have to get used to when you draw on iPad. Disabling line correction, stability or whatever it is called can also help.

I personally use a paper-textured screen cover and switched the default nib for a pen-like one that I bought online. Before I also use pencil-like brushes on Procreate, but I've since stopped that. Like everything, you just have to get used to it with more experience.

It seems that people misunderstands, so Im sorry. i mean that how do I make the experience feel like sketching with a pencil? How do I put it… its like, I feel that when I draw on ipad, it doesnt turn out as aesthetic if you know what I mean.

My university friends had a big conversation about that around ten years ago. I'm not sure if they actually made any progress on it, though.

You mean the shape of the pencil? If yes, not really. I like both mechanical and traditional pencils.

Wacom has felt nibs, they made drawing digitally more natural for me. Imo it's nicer than paper like screen protector+standard nib. felt nib doesn't wear off as much with smooth surface.

Have you tried using different brushes/tools in the app? Sometimes you need to manually create your own to suit your taste or comfortability especially the pen pressure. The texture thing is something that you should really get used to.
