I've always tried to aim for around the 2000-3000 word mark for my chapters but it will always vary from person to person. However many words it takes to get your story told is the safe bet. As for over explaining, this is something I feel like I struggle with as well. I have to reread my work...
While not precisely a pet, one of the main protagonists in my series has a crimson colored dire wolf companion who just so happens to be the other main protagonist. I'm not sure if that counts.
I personally really enjoy writing scifi with magic / supernatural elements mixed in. I always referred to it as "Magic Tech".
I'd also like to give writing isekai a shot. While my current series has some isekai elements, going deeper into the genre I think would be fun!
I write so I can share my stories with the world and hopefully make someone's day a little bit better. My dream would be to go full time, but I know just how difficult that can be.
