The way I did it was, if the character wasn't E rank yet (not including Elaine No.3) then the character can get exp equivalent to what's needed for the next two levels.
Liana already had the exp for level 5, but hadn't done the rank exam yet so was still level 4.
When she's done the exam, she'll be level 7.
