You can encourage your readers to comment. A simple "tftc" is already appreciated.

Too many factors are play in receiving regular comments. Style of writing, genre, target audience, medium in which they read, everything plays a role. My experience has been readers using mobile or tablets tend to leave less comments, while PC users, generally comment. Obvious reasons.

You can try engaging like asking question in the author's notes, or putting a poll. Or even giving freebies, if you can allow it in your story.

Tony has been pretty good about keeping bots off the platform. Even on other sites, it is rare to find comments on stories past maybe the first few chapters. Plus, many readers just add it to their reading list and don't pick it up till later or the story is completed.

It's very realistic. Most humans on this site are silent readers. They won't bother logging in or commenting.

But bots? They will leaves a comment on your novel like this:

One of my chapters got about 900 views and no comments. It's really weird sometimes. But thinking back to when I was a reader and not a writer, I used to actually read novels and not leave any comments. So I understand that there must be other people like me

It is. Very few people will comment, especially if they can just read a new chapter.

I use a tablet. I comment about homonyms & misspelling (because works on the Web can be perfected!); sometimes it's ideas (a spinnaker on a tall ship on a broad reach would be impressive & efficient in all weather, but they weren't invented until the 1860s; no reason an isikai couldn't use them!)

It is actually realistic. Out of the readers, there are those that:

-Plan to read
-Paused
-Dropped

There are several other factors, but I just wanted you to know that not all 500 readers are actually reading it as at that time. And for folks who stockpile to binge it, most just click the next button until they reach the latest chapter, where they now have the patience to comment since there are no chapters available.

It's also about engagement as an author. Most of those who have active readers consistently include an author's note at the end of their chapters. It could be questions, polls, or completely unrelated shit posts.

Several authors are even the first comment most times. I don't know if it's just me, but if I have the urge to comment but the comment section is empty, I just ignore it and move to the next chapter. But if there's a comment or two there, I usually stop to do so too.

My most popular story so far has, I think, twelve comments (of which three were deleted along with my mistake when they pointed out I'd uploaded the wrong chapter) total (and two short discussions on the forums), five of them on one single chapter.

Some are, but not all.

For the social networks, Twitter, and Facebook, and YouTube, most if not all of their revenue comes from advertising, since there is such a thing in advertising as projected reach where you could estimate how many people would see (and click) your ads. For the social networks with millions of users, such a reach is truly massive, and there is a lot of gain with boosting that traffic even further with bots even if the advertisers don't want such a thing.

But for the small sites like this one?

The projected reach is very small. No advertiser is going to believe there is that much traffic, and thus no need to boost it with bots...

There are scrappers, most likely, but they very doesn't count as readers.
