I gained another negative rating on RR :(

I mean, I gained two followers, but I'm now down to 4 stars, and I wasn't given any explanation why they rated me so low. Take a look:

Also, my latest chapter didn't have as much views as the last one (15 vs. 39). Then again, I gain more views on this site than there, so at least I'm only half-bummed today.

Edit: okay, so I got a new 5-star and review, which is written a hilariously encouraging way, but then, the unthinkable happened. One of the fellow authors I did a review swap with in the past deleted their account, so their rating on my book disappeared, still putting me at 4 stars.

Awe... So all those review swaps aren't helping your metrics? That's a shame.
I anticipated this when posting on RR since I haven't bought any ad space, unlike the average 100-200+ views I get each chapter here on SH. Maybe I'll buy an ad one day once I publish 30 or 40 chapters or so. Readers there aren't interested in stories with little to no content unless it's an established author starting a new series.

Hey, PBJ_Time,
Can you tell me which one of the written reviews for book wasn't from another author that you wrote a thorough review for their books?

I mean, with so many glowing reviews one would expect to retain those readers.

Yeah, they're just swaps I did in the past. I've been told it's just empty feedback in the long run, but review swaps are at least slightly more helpful on RR.

No. No they are not. They weren't written by people who care about your work or despise your work to give you a proper good faith critique of the content in your book. So, you don't really know what works and what doesn't.

And the reason why review swaps are worthless is because those authors aren't going to read your work once the transaction is done. They would rather continue their work then read yours.

Can you tell which one of those review swapped books you have "read" do you continue reading?

My guess is that you stopped reading their work after you gave them your review.

The way I see it is that RR review swaps makes it so that new readers will know if your story is worth checking or not. Again, you don't have to do swaps every week, and I learned that. Here on SH, it's slightly less meaningful because it's not like you can buy ad space here to promote your story.

Anyway, I still read this book titled Auron Trinity when I have the time, a story I did a review swap with. I also continued reading another story called Beyond Infinity, but the author deleted it days ago.

Yeah, you proved my point. Out of nine review swaps you are only reading two, technically one author's work.
And for RR. All that review swap crap is for your to work move higher on the overall ranking list of RR.

Congratulations! You jumped from 25092 to 24991. It doesn't bring you more readers.

Getting people hasn't changed.
One, You need a good cover and a good title to get people to look at your book.
Two, you need to put out a chapter a day until you build up an audience.
Three, your content past the cover needs to be good to keep your readers.

And if your book doesn't achieve those three things then it's a failure and you move on.

I'm tired of all these forum threads about "I'm down because no one is looking at my work. Please blow Sunshine up my ass." won't make your work any better and it doesn't post new chapters any quicker.

This is a hobby right now, and you are having delusions of grandeur if you think you are going to become a professional author in a blink of an eye.

Write what you want in a story, hopefully people hopped along for the ride. And maybe. And I mean MAYBE, you can make a career out of this.

I wasted enough time with this and this is all I got to say.

Ignore stats, just post. It works best. I also ignore swap requests; I did one shoutout swap once; eh, it's not worth it. Also, I think reviews and ratings are totally inconsistent, as the ones who leave their opinions in written form are usually those who complain.

For example:

But my reviews are super mixed. Those who praised my work, it turns out, jumped over here to finish reading my stories on SH.

That says a lot, lol.

I know, and writing always makes me happy. I also feel a bit happy when I get feedback in general because I get to come back with the criticisms they've given me.

All in all, I'm just aware how things work in the web novel scene since I used to get 20-30 comments per chapter on Wattpad and AO3 for writing a purposely bad yakuza BL story just to see if anyone would eat it up (many did). Now, was it a bad idea to delete them without a trace? Maybe, but I wasn't writing what I wanted to write, so who cares?

So, I checked out your book on RR. Read about 8 chapters. I thought the premise in the blurb had a lot of potential to be fun and intense, so I gave it a go.

Even though I'm not a really a fan of in medias res in books, I thought dropping into the action right away was cool, especially since the premise seemed to promise some hack-n-slash action. And even though AI art gets ripped a lot, I thought your selections were fine and added some nice flavor. The system seems cool, and I legit enjoyed looking at all the options Hajime could choose. Also, the steak contest was a first for me in fiction, so hats off for that. I prefer pizza, but still.

There are a few things I didn't like, but the big one for me is that I couldn't care about or get invested in the main character, despite his based Hawaiian shirt and jeans outfit. I mean, you tell us very little about this cat. I don't know if he's a saint or a psycho, if he volunteers to help one-legged orphans, or dips kittens in kerosene and lights them on fire for fun. Nothin'.

And what are his stakes? There appears to be no character dilemma or any kind of tension. Death isn't even an issue, at least up to where I read. The worst I saw was that the lumberjack had to go to the hospital for a while.

Also, I tuned in because I was expecting some young buck to be squaring off with slimes and gobbos, but most of this seems to be about Hajime screwing around with other characters that are even harder to care about.

Despite all that, I followed and favorited because I think this story's premise could make for a wild story with some TLC and more focus.

If you want my unsolicited advice - which most people don't - I say you should write an intense, meaty prologue about Hajime with the aim of introducing the character in a sympathetic way along with his personal and existential stakes. Then, you should ax 90 percent of the characters and focus on the horde survival element.

For example, Hajime goes in for a Beware the Horde delve and some freaky new enemy eats the shit out of his buddies. He manages to pull off a win anyway, but doesn't return to Dork City as normal. Then it goes on from there until he can figure out how to get back/find a new path forward because he got his isekai girlfriend preggers and doesn't want his child to grow up with out him, or some tripe like that.

Anyway, don't give up, stay based and keep writing.

And don't worry about ratings too much, they mean very little in a world with bots and assholes flying around in all directions. The TRUE metric for success is how many copies of your work you can hock on Amazon. I am acquainted with an established author with years of experience who makes enough money with his books to provide for his family, but even he doesn't get super great numbers, ratings or attention on RR (compared to the big RR dawgs).
