Got 1 star because of a comment in forum.

This is the very reason I stopped posting in RR.
The guy give both of my story 1 str rating because I tagged someone (I didn't even tag him). It was one post who got 1 star for the first time.
I can understand if he read it. He gave both of story 1star, in span of second.

There should be at least some kind rating algorithm that doesn't let anyone rate story unless they didn't read.

For a reader it means nothing, but for a writer, it is too much. More so for us who want real response, not some troll.

@Hopper did you give a rating to @K5Rakitan? If so, that’s acceptable, she has asked us to.

If not, why did you do such a petty rating for @HuaiChi ? It feels like the site has explicitly told people they shouldn't needlessly do a 1-star just for the fun of it, even implementing the VPN-detection and the need to add the novel to a reading list. You should now just change to a 5-star, or ask to remove the rating. Though, did you give a rating to @K5Rakitan ?

Yeah, I looked at your profile and novels, he did give one start. First of all, ask tony to remove them. Second, block the user. Third, you can try and report him, but nothing will happen since tehcnically he didn't break any rules.

It is too easy to make an account in SH. He could just make an account and shower me more 1 star. I will just ask Tony to remove them.

From what I’ve seen being reported as “bugs” people can’t review a novel multiple times with the same IP (or device ID?), and you can’t rate while being suspected of using a VPN. I think it would actually be quite hard to troll someone with fake reviews/ratings.

Nah! I know I can't do something about him nor did I cry and twist my panties for all the 1 star rating I got in the past. But that is not the same every writers. We are here for fun, to learn and to improve if possible. Do you really understand how hard it is for some of the new writer who just start writing to get a 1 star rating. Would you even read a story that have very low rating? Have you? We only give low rating when it didn't worth reading.

So, we should just the troll to troll us just because they are troll?

Yeah, people can‘t rate a story twice, not even with multiple accounts. There is a pretty good system in place that tracks IP and most of the time recognizes VPNs, preventing in using multiple accounts to rate your own or bombard others’ works. So at least, you don’t need to be afraid of that.

If RoyalRoad is anything to go by, there isn't much you can do to prevent someone from leaving a false rating. People over there flip through the chapters to make it look like they read your story when they didn't and then leave half star reviews. Even if it was time based, people who are spiteful enough could get around it. Honestly, I'm just not a big fan of review systems on sites like this. Most people are writing as a hobby, they don't need people to trash their novel and be unable to remove the painful review comments. It just kills their motivation to write. Wattpad's star system is a bit better since it still allows them to rank stories, but it's all positive feedback.

For the record, I had someone just today follow me from RoyalRoad to ScribbleHub to continue commenting on my work after I blocked them. Same profile picture, username, etc. All of these sites suck with their toxicity and I'm growing tired of it.

Steam helps with this problem by splitting the displayed reviews as recent/all:

This helps defend a little against one-star troll reviews, as their impact will only be felt for a short time. Of course, a truly determined attacker who persistently makes accounts over a long period of time is basically unstoppable.

Looking at the Wattpad system, unless I'm missing it, there are no "reviews" it's just a vote counter, similar to SH favourites.

I've thought about mixing Steam and Wattpad. So you just have a number of hearts, which is a sum of all the hearts across all your published chapters, and then split them by hearts recently gained in the last month and all-time hearts.
