So weapons are pretty standard in fantasy, LITRPGs, and sci-fi. This we can all agree on but only some have weapons with sentience. Usually anime and manga utilize this trope but a fair amount of stories outside of that have sentient weapons. Halo's Cortana is technically a sentient weapon as she can take over most electronic compounds including weapon systems so she would be the most well known.

What I want to discuss here is the pros and cons of having a sentient weapon as a possible love interest. The weapon can have a transformation ability but let's say that's not possible for a long time. Would such a thing even be wanted in a story? I am considering making the magic sword my MC is given sentient but I can't decide whether to make it just a sentient sword or make it a love interest.
THERE IS A MANWHA WITH THIS THEME!

There are an extensive number of stories with this theme. That's why I'm talking about it.
in my opnion the pro is you are not lonely in your journey.
the weapon maybe know how to use it self and can help you fight or in training

the con is that the weapon can break and you are constantly putting it at risk of breaking and your power is bound to it so if you have a bad relationship with your weapon can be a problem ex your weapon is in love with you and you are banging the bar maid in the in with the weapon in the room that might be a problem in the future

so i think u can make the progression of the power of the mc/sword be bound to the relationship between both of them... like being one with your sword literrally well not much of a writer myself but that my opnion

Ego swords/weapons are cool and all but making them a love interest is quite weird ngl...

This thread reminds me of elemental gelade as well though in that case the weapon has a human form as well.

I know one thing when sword GF says she's going to cut "it" off for whatever reason you better take her seriously and have a second sword ready to fight her off
Second sword? That would count as cheating in her eyes.

To be honest, this is not where I thought this conversation was going but consider this. The sword is sentient but has the soul of a Fae who believes in Fae supremacy and thus, is toxic but warms up to the MC while the mask has an overly attached love goblin personality that tries to defend the MC at almost every turn in ways that usually cause him more trouble. Both the mask and sword bicker with each other like an overly dramatic old lesbian couple. Sword will also make tons of swordplay and fencing puns constantly while the mask is just, really hungry and keeps eating more of his regenerative face.
First of, ok. Second, eww. Even if I can regenerate like hell, I would not want the constant feeling of my face being peeled off.

I know that there are mites on my face eating my dead skin flakes, but that is it, flakes.

What about a inanimate non sentient metal walking stick/cane?
Maybe...

That's kind of what his mask does. It is slowly eating his face off but his regeneration prevents him from getting too much eaten off. It does translate every language and changes based on his internal emotions though so that's a payoff.

well i remenber a novel that i read. the protagonist was crazy about katana and iaijutsu so he in the process of proving his point in the superiority of the katana he end up creating a ego sword.... context to the next organization that will appear is a bunch of ego weapons that learned with demons how to take over their master so that they could fight agaist their user opression by becoming the user! the moral of that arc was that they just didnt find their true master saddly most of the weapons got destroyed in the fight(cause only katanas are true weapons)
