I'm personally rather fond of barrier magic. It's probably the easiest way to nerf ranged attacks (i.e. characters with guns), and provide a consistent reason why melee is still broadly required in this world. It's also easier to balance things such that defensive magic is slightly stronger than offensive magic.

I kind of imagined a warfare paradigm where magical barriers/wards are nearly always employed, and both sides will trade large magical spells (or cannon shots) trying to wear down the barriers. Meanwhile, the melee side will engage in conventional medieval/classical fashion. The ranged users aren't very effective on the melee users while barriers are still present.

However, if one side's barriers go kapoof, then the ranged users will have free reign on an unshielded army. This would probably be a good time to retreat lol.

Any faction that you enjoy writing! If you like dark and evil things, you can lean that way! If you like lighthearted and fluffy things, you can make a harem like Raul.

I posted it in receptionist thread, under the guise of a donation to the library xD

You know, I just realised that maybe we should try and make non-quest submissions to AGSA more visible, since not everything can be quested but can still be significant...
Okay, I read the chapter. I think it is pretty neat! Is it weird that I was thinking of having Raul fight the Duke eventually, but now I don't want to...? :sweating_profusely:

Huh...wow. I'm somewhat cognizant of the fact that I might have made the Duke too cool, but part of me didn't expect that xD.

Mind you, he is being very rash. I like to think he has a somewhat understandable reason for doing so other than just being a glory hound, though.

Rushing to colonise the place is an obviously blind, provocative measure, as while the region seems unoccupied at least, no one knows how the neighbouring polities would react. But...

The Duke's Daring Plan
It honestly could be viable. By acting quick and projecting power in the region before formal relations are opened with neighbouring polities, the Archipelago would have seized the initiative and placed their neighbours on the back foot as they are forced to try and de-escalate with a peer power that clearly is not afraid to throw their weight around.

After, when you get an unknown element in your backyard with a shitload of airships that you know nothing about, except that they are taking ground quite quickly you tend to tread carefully, and definitely want to calm them down so you can feel them out, even if you have to sacrifice a few minor things.

This diplomatic advantage is very important since the Archipelago desperately needs resources, but the new neighbours don't know that. Act too passively and it is likely that the more audacious of neighbours might test the waters, even if they will be careful in doing so.

Of course, even by projecting a strong front, some people will be able to recognise that it's a bluff. It's a relatively sensible conclusion to come to, after all.

The thing is- even if they can call the bluff, no one wants to do so because it's a bluff backed by an actual bite.

With this in mind, one could argue that the Duke is actually planning ahead, just in an unconventional way. He probably is acting with the assumption that they will be able to keep the Great Lake Region, and so is focused on quickly developing the area to satisfy resource demands and give the Archipelago a spot of hope in the form of a new settlement in this alien new land- proof that they have a place under this foreign sun.

Sorry, that was a mouthful, but inspiration struck me like thunder, and I had to quickly type this out. It's a bit rough, but it feels entirely plausible with some tweaking xD

Also, here's something I cooked up quickly. I just need a name for the house now. Possibly a motto?

It's my personal bias, but in fiction, I really like the idea of 'villain who is full of shit but can actually beat you in wrestling' especially since there are the stereotypes surrounding nobility (them being armchair leaders unless they are young and plucky) in play in this context, which makes the possibility of Grogar actually being able to pull his own weight in a confrontation waaay more exciting than 'my guards will protect me while I spew bullshit, only that they will proceed to die to this awesome person I am confronting'

Grogar's name sounds like an early-game boss's name, tbh- of some Orc/Troll boss specifically. Also, you know, his son is literally called Gawrgaru. If anything I'm expecting a family legend about the founder rising to the top even with such a silly name, with a family tradition of giving bad names to 'build character'. Afterall, if no one dares make fun of your name, you know you've made it.
I Agree! Make him a guy hellbent on going to war and sort of a piece of shit, but a competent piece of shit that has his own list of accomplishments.

Quick question, what kind of colour scheme you think Grogar and his son's heraldry would have?
Raid Luxia's stash~ :blob_ghost::blob_ghost::blob_ghost:

Blue and white of course, like any good shark would have~
Hm, I would have went with darker colours like a heavy shade of green, blue and white dont quite have that impact >.>

Working on a military text by our favourite (only) Duke in the lands, showing how conflict is conducted in a land of magic. (And most importantly, developing him a bit) Got any things you folks would like me to add?
I would love if the piece sounds a bit biased. Like the duke probably has some biases against some tactics + such a piece probably would serve as a bit of propaganda too.
